The Director of Data Analytics and Intelligence is a key member of the Technology and Data Services department, reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). This role is responsible for shaping and executing the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) enterprise data strategy, which aims to unlock the value of data to enhance member engagement, improve operational efficiency, and facilitate informed decision-making throughout the organization. 

The Director oversees the strategic design, acquisition, management, and implementation of comprehensive data and technology architecture that includes core business systems, association management systems, e-commerce platforms, and data integration services. This role also encompasses data governance, business intelligence, advanced analytics, and the operationalization of AI and machine learning technologies. 

This position is highly visible and collaborative, requiring a strategic thinker with deep technical expertise and a hands-on approach. The Director will work closely with both technology and business leaders to develop data platforms that prioritize scalability, security, reliability, usability, and manageability. Leading a multidisciplinary team, the Director will deliver enterprise-wide data-driven insights that inform strategic decisions, optimize IT service delivery, promote data literacy, and achieve business outcomes. This leader combines extensive technical knowledge with business acumen to guide initiatives in Data Engineering, Analytics, Business Intelligence, Advanced Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute the enterprise Data Analytics & Intelligence strategy in alignment with AAOS’s technology roadmap and business priorities, fostering a data-driven culture across the organization. 
  • Team Leadership: Leads, mentors, and grows a multidisciplinary team including business system analysts, data engineers, BI developers, and data scientists, ensuring they meet performance goals. Promote a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.  
  • Data Product Ownership: Manages the lifecycle of data products and analytics solutions, ensuring they are well-governed, scalable, reusable, and aligned with stakeholder needs. 
  • Data Governance: Establishes enterprise data governance and quality frameworks, including data stewardship models, data dictionaries, lineage tracking, and master data management practices. 
  • Business Intelligence: Drives business intelligence and operational reporting by defining KPIs, metrics frameworks, and visualizations that supports strategic decision-making. 
  • Data Literacy: Champions data literacy across the organization, equipping business users with self-service BI capabilities, training, and best practices. 
  • AI/ML Initiatives: Operationalizes AI/ML initiatives by developing and managing AI pipelines, MLOps practices, model monitoring, and lifecycle governance. 
  • Technical Expertise: Provides subject matter expertise to analyze and resolve technical issues related to data management and enterprise analytics. Fosters these capabilities within the team. 
  • Compliance: Ensures compliance with data privacy standards and regulations such as HIPAA, GDPR, PII, and PCI. 
  • Business acumen: Understands business opportunities and translates them into technical solutions. Collaborates with key business owners to identify data trends and actionable insights that inform strategic decisions and future product planning. 
  • Collaboration: Coordinates with the Enterprise PMO and business stakeholders to execute strategic initiatives and support membership recruitment and retention goals. 
  • Strong Financial Acumen: Develops and maintains annual operating and capital budgets with financial oversight of the assigned budget. Creates Business Cases to support emergent budget items and opportunities 
  • Thought Leadership:  Serves as a thought leader on data and AI trends, continuously evaluating emerging technologies for their potential to enhance business outcomes.

Qualifications

 Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, Data Science, or similar. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • 10+ years of progressive experience in data and analytics leadership roles, including direct management of cross-functional teams. 
  • 5 years of hands-on experience in designing and architecting solutions in data management, governance, and business intelligence. 
  • Expertise with modern business intelligence tools and platforms (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, SQL, Azure Synapse, Snowflake). 
  • Hands-on experience with AI/ML frameworks and foundational knowledge of LLMs (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude, Azure OpenAI, Hugging Face). 
  • Strong understanding of IT Infrastructure and Security. 
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build consensus and discuss complex technical issues with technology engineers across multiple disciplines. 
  • Familiarity with data privacy standards and regulations. 
  • Strong business acumen and organizational awareness, with a proven track record of aligning data initiatives to measurable business outcomes. 
  • Outstanding technical planning skills with the ability to prioritize and multitask across several work streams. 
  • Highly collaborative with the ability to manage and motivate project teams and meet deliverables. 
  • Experience with project management fundamentals and a metric-driven PMO environment. 
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment and stay abreast of constant innovation; possesses an industry best practices perspective. 
  • Ability to serve as a design and technical subject matter expert. 
  • Thought leader driving innovation through maintaining an awareness of trends, technologies, and new solutions in the market. Ability to evaluate relevance for use to support and advance the Academy’s business strategy. 
  • Proven track record of fostering data literacy and analytics enablement across business units, with an emphasis on training, adoption, and change management. 

Desired:  

  • Experience working with association management systems or CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce, Microsoft Dynamics 365, SaaS platforms, and their customizations/integrations) 
  • Proven hands-on experience with Power BI, SQL, and modern data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, Azure, MS Fabric, ETL pipelines) 
  • Proven experience with DataOps, employing automation, monitoring, and collaboration to ensure data quality and reliability 
  • Strong financial acumen—budgeting, ROI analysis, value tracking for analytics initiatives 
  • Experience with implementing and running critical ITIL disciplines  
  • Experience with Hybrid Cloud Architectures, JIRA, and Azure DevOps 
  • Experience with medical data registries and outcomes analysis reporting preferred  
  • Demonstrated curiosity toward evolving trends in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and how to apply them in a business setting 
  • Previous work experience with medical associations or not-for-profit organizations is a plus 

Salary Range: $175,000-$182,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
